Kate Middleton's wave for fans as royal wedding mania sweeps nation

Kate Middleton (Pic:PA) A beaming Kate Middleton waves to the crowds

IT was the simple gesture that had fans in raptures as royal wedding mania swept the nation on the eve of her big day.

Beaming Kate Middleton waved at wellwishers who had gathered outside her London hotel to catch a glimpse of the bride-to-be as she settled in for her last night as a single woman.

They cheered, waved Union flags and called out the 29-year-old’s name when she arrived with mum Carole, 56, and sister Pippa, 27.

Prince William had his own surprise for delighted fans as he went on an impromptu walkabout to meet those camped out near Clarence House. He spent several minutes shaking hands, chatting and posing for photos.

Not far away in the streets around Westminster Abbey, the atmosphere was buzzing as the clock ticked down to Kate and 28-year-old William’s big day.

Hundreds gathered to add to those already camping in the hope of securing the ideal vantage point from which to see the procession. A million are expected to line the route.

Carolyn Prepp, 65, flew to London from her home in Ontario, Canada. She said: “I came specifically for the wedding. I wanted to experience it. It’s history in the making. I came with my daughter. She thinks William is great.”

Retired teacher Kay Jones, 88, from California, added: “I’ve always loved the royals. The atmosphere will be wild. Americans love it.”

The Duchess of Cornwall also went on a walkabout, along the Mall.

She said: “It’s wonderful and all very exciting. There’s a great atmosphere and it’s so nice to meet people and see how the celebrations are getting under way.” David Cameron visited royal fans along the same stretch.

Former England skipper David Beckham got special permission from his club LA Galaxy to fly from Los Angeles with wife Victoria.

He said: “It really is amazing. Our country needs it. Our country wants it. The British public love the Royal Family.”

Kate made last-minute preparations for the wedding with William yesterday.

She also visited the Abbey at 9am with Prince Harry, 26 – William’s best man – bridesmaids Lady Louise Windsor and Margarita Armstrong-Jones and pageboy Tom Pettifer. Kate left her husband-to-be and checked in to a £5,000-a-night royal suite at the Goring Hotel in Belgravia shortly before 6pm.

Staff filled her room with 20 bouquets of red and white freesias, lilies and roses.

Owner Jeremy Goring said: “We are delighted to be playing a small part in such a great day.”

William spent his last night as a bachelor at Clarence House. He enjoyed a dinner with Harry, Charles and Camilla. His gran, the Queen, hosted a gala dinner at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel near Hyde Park for British and foreign royals.

Two billion TV viewers worldwide will watch today’s wedding, where Kate will promise to “love, comfort, honour and keep” William. As the Mirror exclusively revealed last week, she has opted not to “obey” him.

Police yesterday put the finishing touches to the massive security operation designed to make sure the wedding goes off without a hitch.

Officers have been scouring Westminster for explosives and hidden weapons in recent days, inspecting drains, lamp-posts and traffic lights.

More than 5,000 will today form a ring of steel around the proceedings. Snipers will be on rooftops and undercover officers are to mingle among the crowds in an operation that could cost up to £20million – Scotland Yard’s most expensive and high-profile in a generation.

More than 20 people suspected of planning to disrupt the wedding were yesterday arrested.

Royal wedding: New Testino photo of Prince William and Kate Middleton is incredibly poignant

William and Kate: Portrait picture by Mario Testino Prince William and Kate Middleton

THE photo used in Wills and Kate’s official wedding programme seems familiar... and incredibly poignant.

Mario Testino’s portrait invokes the memory of his mum Diana.

Testino’s iconic images of Diana were published in July 1997, just before she died.

He said: “Two people in love have a glow and a presence more powerful than anything else, and I wanted that to be the subject of the picture.

“William is a very photogenic person... self-confident, relaxed, impressive – and so much like his mother.”

Bunting breaks out all across Britain as Royal Wedding parties begin

Union Flags flew proudly and red, white and blue bunting fluttered in the breeze as excited guests wished Prince William and bride Kate well for their big day.

The country's biggest street party took place in Gravesend, Kent, where more than 600 schoolchildren tucked into a vast open-air feast.

Young revellers donned facepaint, flew kites and waved British flags to the strain of a brass band.

Leigh Hovey, head teacher of Wrotham Road Primary School, said: "I think it's important that the children mark an important event in history.

"To see our future King marry is a significant event and I want the children to be able to say in 20, 30 or 40 years what they were doing when that happened."

Thousands of Royal fans pitched tents and spread picnic blankets along The Mall in London as they claimed some of the best spots to view today's mega-event.

Champagne bottles were opened early as the famous stretch became a colourful sea of flags and bunting. Buskers and brass bands performed impromptu concerts.

WATCH the best of the action from William and Kate's big bash

The carnival-style scenes were beamed on TV to millions around the world.

Tina Owen, from Melbourne, Australia, flew 30 hours to get to the event.

She said: "It's like a mini-UN. We're from all over the world, but we've become a community already. Your city has got a really, really big soul."

Prime Minister David Cameron visited The Mall to meet Royal well-wishers - and return to the spot where he camped out for Prince Charles' 1981 wedding aged just 14. Mr Cameron admitted he was feeling "quite excited" about the ceremony. The Duchess of Cornwall was also spotted beaming and waving to fans.

Elsewhere, 1,700 students at Brighton College in Brighton, East Sussex, joined a Royal party in the grounds - using an amazing two miles of Union Flag bunting.

Les Pocklington, of Newbury, Berks, celebrated by making a hand-made miniature carriage from concrete and metal - and adorned it with hundreds of seashells.

Meanwhile more than 200 pupils at St Pius X Primary School in Middlesbrough lunched in the sunshine wearing Union Flag hats and proudly waving flags.

Another school to start celebrating early was Cottingley Primary in Leeds, West Yorks, where pupils held a mock wedding - with the Queen's approval.

Classmates Courtney Mitchell and Joseph Dolan, both 11, played Wills and Kate, with teachers and fellow pupils waving union flags in the school hall.

Vicar Rev Jude Smith presided over the "wedding" before the 300 kids tucked into a banquet of fizzy drinks and crisps in a marquee erected in the playground. Bursar Julie Whitehead said: "It was a glorious sunny day and the children really got into the Royal Wedding spirit."

The Queen gave her support to the project after head Dianne Elson wrote to Buckingham Palace explaining the plans.

Royal fans from up and down the country were pitching their tents in the capital yesterday at a special campsite.

Camp Royale on Clapham Common, South West London, will also be the setting for free parties today and Saturday for up to 5,000 people. A big screen will show the wedding, and food and drink will be on offer, including a "Windsor Knot" real ale brewed for the wedding.

Alexandra and Philip Broadhead, both 27, travelled there from Bournemouth, Dorset, with 23-month-old son Felix. Philip said: "It's a bit of fun and an opportunity to be where everything's happening."

Today well-wishers will be going street party-mad AGAIN - with more than 5,500 outdoor bashes planned around Britain.

Royal wedding: International Space Station astronauts send good luck message to Prince William and Kate Middleton

Messages of good luck to the Duke of Cambridge and his bride have streamed in from countless far-flung spots across the globe - and beyond.

Even astronauts from the International Space Station sent greetings to the couple, ahead of their marriage.

In their interstellar message, broadcast on the BBC, Flight Engineers Paolo Nespoli, Ron Garan and Cady Coleman offered their congratulations, shortly after the station passed over the UK in orbit.

"From space, the Expedition 27 crew at the International Space Station would like to offer their congratulations and best wishes," they said.

"We will be watching and waiting."

The group, who said they had been following wedding developments with "great interest", expect to have a "great view" of the big day.

Royal wedding: Prince William made Duke of Cambridge

Prince William and Kate Middleton (Pic:PA) Prince William and Kate Middleton

Prince William has been made the Duke of Cambridge on his wedding day by his grandmother the Queen, Buckingham Palace announced.

The royal groom was given a dukedom - the highest rank in British peerage - to mark his marriage to Kate Middleton.

Miss Middleton will now become Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge on her marriage at the much-anticipated ceremony in Westminster Abbey.

William also became the Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus, which means Kate will become the Countess of Strathearn and Baroness Carrickfergus.

All titles are in the gift of the Queen and it was up to the monarch to choose which one to bestow on her grandson and his new wife.
But William's thoughts will also have been taken into account by the royal matriarch in a private discussion between the Prince and his grandmother.

Tradition dictates that royal men receive a title on their wedding - and often more than one.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement: "The Queen has today been pleased to confer a Dukedom on Prince William of Wales.

"His titles will be Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus.

"Prince William thus becomes His Royal Highness The Duke of Cambridge and Miss Catherine Middleton on marriage will become Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge."

As well as a duchess, Miss Middleton is also technically Princess William of Wales.

According to protocol, she is not officially Princess Catherine as she was not born a princess in her own right.

Instead she adopts her husband's first name, in the same way as Princess Michael of Kent, who married the Queen's cousin Prince Michael of Kent.

But it is likely that in the eyes of the media and public, she could always be known as Princess Catherine or Princess Kate.

The Duke of Cambridge was seen as the favourite for William's new title in the run-up to the wedding.
The Queen even paid a visit to the city just two days ago.

Kate Middleton (Pic: Big Pictures)

Kate will become Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge

Charles Kidd, editor of Debrett's Peerage, said of the dukedom: "It's a well-known place and I think it will have some resonance with the public."

The last Duke of Cambridge was a famous military figure who wed a commoner for love but then also kept a mistress for more than 30 years.

Born in 1819, Prince George, a grandson of George III, married actress Sarah Louisa Fairbrother in 1847 when she was pregnant with their third child but his marriage was never recognised by his cousin Queen Victoria.

Like William, this Duke of Cambridge joined the Army. He served in the Crimean War and was promoted to commander-in-chief in 1887.

Once married, the newlyweds will pass a statue of the Duke sat on a horse close to the Ministry of Defence in Whitehall in their carriage procession.

The last Duchess of Cambridge was the glamorous German-born Princess Augusta Wilhelmina Louisa of Hesse-Cassel, married to Prince Adolphus Frederick, the 1st Duke of Cambridge and mother to Prince George, the 2nd Duke of Cambridge.

Well-wishers turned the route of the royal wedding procession into a sea of red, white and blue as the world came together to celebrate Prince William and Kate Middleton's big day.

Waving flags and clutching umbrellas against the predicted rain, the crowds waited with mounting excitement for the first glimpse of the couple - and in particular the bride's dress, which has been kept a closely-guarded secret.

Kate was said to be nervous but calm as she made her final preparations for a ceremony that will be watched on television by two billion people worldwide.

The Dean of Westminster, the Very Rev Dr John Hall, who is conducting the service, told Sky News: "I think she will be quite calm, as a matter of fact.

"She seems to be very much in control of herself and looking forward very much to the day.

"After the final rehearsal when William and Catherine came on Wednesday evening, they both seemed to be very happy. I'm sure they will be a little bit nervous but I'm sure they can cope with that."

Among the 1,900 guests invited to the Westminster Abbey service are a number of celebrities, including David and Victoria Beckham.

Victoria spoke of her delight at the occasion, writing on Twitter: "London looks beautiful!!! We are so proud to be British!"

Another of those attending the ceremony, TV presenter Ben Fogle, also expressed his excitement. He wrote on Twitter: "Quick walk in Hyde Park with the dogs while the girls have their hair done. Very excited. London feels electric."

As hundreds of thousands of well-wishers made their way to join the celebrations, a proud owner carried his British bulldog, draped in a Union flag, through Victoria station.

Burly men in crowns, women in glittering tiaras, children clutching flags and families with picnics all took to the Tube on their way to central London.

At Green Park station, the nearest to Buckingham Palace where William and Kate will kiss on the balcony later today, the platforms resembled rush hour as early as 6am.

On the Mall opposite Stable Yard, a group of students wore wedding dresses bought from charity shops as they joined the celebrations.

The famous Buckingham Palace balcony, where William and Kate will appear after the service for their first kiss in public, was decorated with a crimson drape lined with yellow edging.

There was a cheer from the crowd as palace staff began preparing the balcony for the historic kiss.

At London's Heathrow Airport, the national anthem was played as passengers awaited their flights this morning.

Royal wedding: Daily Mirror wishes good luck to Prince William and Kate Middleton

Prince William and Kate Middleton (Pic:PA) Kate Middleton and Prince William

WEDDING days are a nerve-jangling moment for any happy couple. But for Prince William and Catherine Middleton, today is an especially daunting prospect.

Few newlyweds share this most intimate of moments with a million people on the streets of London and two billion more watching on TV around the world.

But Wills and Kate have conducted their courtship and preparations for the big day with grace and modesty. Part out of seeking to avoid the three-ring circus that surrounded other royal weddings. Part out of the realisation that the country’s relationship with the monarchy as an institution has changed irrevocably.

The Royal Family are no longer at the centre of public life. And for “The Firm” to survive, it needs to make further changes to reflect how Britain has changed.

In 1923 the BBC were asked not to broadcast the marriage of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (later the Queen Mother) and the Duke of York in case men “might hear the service, perhaps even some of them sitting in public houses, with their hats on”. How times have changed.

While wedding fever has gripped the United States, our own interest has been as relatively low-key as the couple themselves. It reflects not only a change in our regard for the monarchy, but also a reflection of these difficult economic times.

One day Wills and Kate will be King and Queen. But from the moment they become husband and wife, the responsibility for taking the monarchy to its next, more modest, stage rests on their shoulders. But that is a debate for another time.

Today, even the cynical among us should enjoy the pomp and circumstance, the colour and majesty, and cheer two young people who are declaring their love in time-honoured tradition.

Good luck to them both.

Royal Wedding: The world awakes to Prince William and Kate Middleton's big day

The world will watch in fascination today as Prince William marries Kate Middleton in a ceremony combining royal pomp and tender romance.

Months of meticulous preparations will come to fruition when the couple say their vows in Westminster Abbey in front of 1,900 guests and a global television audience of two billion.

Forecasters' warnings of rain showers over central London this morning failed to dampen the mounting excitement about the long-awaited royal wedding.

Heavy showers could fall on the royal couple's much-anticipated balcony kiss.

Although temperatures could reach 20C (68F) in the capital, there is a greater risk of rain as the early afternoon approaches.

William and his new bride are expected to appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace at 1.25pm.

Billy Payne, a forecaster for MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "There's a reasonable chance of a few heavy showers around at that time.

"We're expecting temperatures of up to 20 degrees, which is quite pleasant for this time of year. But fairly brisk north-easterly winds should take the edge off."

As wedding guests begin to arrive at Westminster Abbey from 8.15am it is likely to be cloudy, he said.

But this will probably give way to sunny spells from the late morning.

However, there is also a higher chance that rain could fall on Miss Middleton as she steps from the limousine at 11am on her father's arm to enter the abbey.

The forecaster added: "The later you go into the morning the higher the risk is of showers breaking out.

"Because the sun is quite strong, the showers will be heavy in nature with risk of thunder, particularly during the early afternoon."

Hundreds of thousands of well-wishers are expected in London to applaud the couple and enjoy the party atmosphere.

The weather looks set to be kinder to other parts of the UK that have featured in the royal love story.

At St Andrews in Fife, where the couple met as undergraduates, a wedding breakfast party with an expected 1,500 guests is forecast to be bathed in sunshine.

The wedding will also be shown on big screens outside the coffee shop at Balmoral Castle, near Ballater, Aberdeenshire.

One of the hottest UK spots promises to be in north-west Scotland where temperatures could hit 20C (68F).

Showers are predicted for Anglesey - where a series of celebratory events are scheduled. William works there as a search and rescue helicopter pilot and that is where the couple will have their first marital home.

Parties in Miss Middleton's home village of Bucklebury, Berkshire could also be hit by the same rain clouds threatening London.

But Helen Chivers of the Met Office said yesterday there was only a small chance of rain in London today.

She forecast sunny spells and predicted it should be dry when Miss Middleton arrives at the abbey.

Scores of well-wishers have been camped outside Westminster Abbey for days to get the best spot for the first full view of the bride's dress when she steps out of the Rolls-Royce carrying her to the service.

Miss Middleton, 29, will walk up the aisle on her father's arm as a commoner.

Just over an hour later she will leave, with her new husband by her side, as an HRH, a Princess and a future Queen.

Invited guests include David and Victoria Beckham, Sir Elton John and Guy Ritchie and Prime Minister David Cameron.

A host of politicians, clergy, military chiefs, ambassadors and more than 45 foreign royals will begin filling the abbey from 8.15am.

There too will be William's proud grandparents the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, his father the Prince of Wales and stepmother the Duchess of Cornwall, joined by some 40 members of the British royal family, as well as close friends and confidantes of the couple.

William, 28, and his brother Prince Harry, 26, who is his best man, will arrive at the historic 1,000-year-old church at 10.15am.

By then the second-in-line to the throne may have been given a new title by the Queen, in a traditional gesture, to mark his wedding.

The groom, an RAF search and rescue helicopter pilot, will be dressed in red, wearing the famous scarlet tunic of an Irish Guards officer, rather than an Air Force uniform.

William faces a nailbiting 45-minute wait until his bride's arrival, part of which he will spend in private with Harry in the tiny side Chapel of St Edmund.

Kate spent her last night as a single woman with her parents, Michael and Carole, sister Pippa and brother James at the exclusive Goring hotel in Belgravia, a short distance from Buckingham Palace.

William spent the evening at Clarence House with his family and gave royal enthusiasts on The Mall a treat as he went on an unplanned walkabout, admitting his "nerves" to the crowds.

As he spent several minutes shaking hands and thanking people for their support, he even joked: "All I've got to do is get my lines right."

Best man Prince Harry followed William and admitted to fans he had left his speech to the last minute.

He confessed: "I finished it yesterday. I thought it was a bit late."

Friends Sue Heppell, 59, Susie Record, 67, and Ann Burch, 65, travelled from Newcastle to find a good spot outside Clarence House at midday yesterday.

Mrs Record said she had met William last night and he had seemed very relaxed about his impending nuptials.

"He asked us whether we were sleeping out," she said. "He didn't seem surprised."

At exactly 10.51 today, the world will hope to get the first glimpse of Kate's dress, which has been kept a closely-guarded secret, when she leaves for the abbey.

However, they may have to wait, as the hotel has erected screens to ensure no-one catches a glimpse before she arrives at the abbey.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to line the mile-and-a-half route to Westminster Abbey, which takes in some of London's most famous landmarks as it passes through The Mall, Whitehall and Parliament Square.

Some 5,000 police officers are on duty as part of Britain's biggest security operation this century, amid continuing fears about the threat of terrorism and disruptive demonstrations.

The wedding service is a traditional religious affair with a strong flavour of "Britishness", and includes music by three of the nation's favourite composers, Elgar, Britten and Vaughan Williams.

The abbey has been decorated with an "avenue of trees" along the nave made up of eight English field maples and two hornbeams.

William and Kate's nuptials are the 15th to be celebrated at the holy site, which has witnessed 37 coronations over the centuries, beginning with William the Conqueror in 1066.

The wedding of this William comes more than a millennium after the first King William was crowned.

Kate is following in the footsteps of Diana, Princess of Wales, and will not promise to "obey" her new husband in her vows but instead to "love, comfort, honour and keep" him.

With William choosing not to wear a wedding ring, only he will say "With this ring I thee wed", as he places the simple, slim band fashioned from a nugget of Welsh gold on his bride's finger.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, is marrying the couple, the Bishop of London, the Rt Rev Richard Chartres, will give the address, and the Dean of Westminster, the Very Rev Dr John Hall, is conducting the service.

The witnesses who sign the historic marriage registers during the ceremony will be the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, Harry, Kate's parents, her sister Pippa and her brother James.

The guest list has provoked controversy, with the Foreign Office announcing the last-minute withdrawal of the Syrian ambassador's invitation yesterday in the wake of a bloody crackdown on protesters against president Bashar Assad.

Further questions have been raised about why former Labour prime ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown were not invited while Tory counterparts Sir John Major and Baroness Thatcher were.

After the ceremony, William and Kate will ride back to Buckingham Palace in the open-top 1902 State Landau, the same fairytale horse-drawn carriage used by Charles and Diana on their wedding day 30 years earlier - although if it rains, the newly-weds will use the Glass Coach.

At 1.25pm, the bride and groom will step out onto the Palace's famous balcony, joined by the Queen and their families to watch the thundering flypast of a Lancaster, a Spitfire and a Hurricane from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and Two Tornado and Two Typhoon jets.

Then, the moment the world will be waiting for - the long-awaited kiss, the first time William and Kate have ever done so in public.

There will be two receptions at the palace, one with canapes hosted by the Queen in the afternoon for 650 guests, followed by the Prince of Wales's more intimate black-tie gathering of 300 close family and friends in the evening.

The 85-year-old monarch will skip the evening party, missing Harry's best man speech, by heading out of the capital with the Duke of Edinburgh for a private weekend, allowing guests to party the night away in her official London home.

The royal wedding is the culmination of a romance that began more than eight years ago when William and Kate met as students at St Andrews University in Fife, Scotland.

Their story has captured the hearts of people across the planet and thousands of foreign journalists, photographers and TV crews have descended on London to cover the event.

Millions of British workers are enjoying an extra public holiday to celebrate and many will attend one of the 5,500 street parties being organised across the country, including one in Downing Street.
