Prince William and Kate Middleton's royal wedding celebration made Prince Charles lose his voice

Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, and Britain's Prince Charles arrive at the West Door of Westminster Abbey (Pic:Getty) Prince Charles and Camilla arrive for the wedding

PRINCE Charles yesterday told how his vocal chords took a battering during the raucous celebrations at William and Kate’s Palace wedding reception.

The 62-year-old lost his voice after chatting away to the newlyweds and their pals during the boozy party that went on until dawn.

Charles and Camilla left at midnight, but the damage had already been done. The croaky prince shared his experience with a crowd of 350 gathered at the revamped Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-on-Avon.

Asked how he was by visitor Andrew Mosley, 23, from Solihull, the prince replied: “Actually, I lost my voice after the party.”

Charles, who is president of the Royal Shakespeare Company, also chatted to royal fan Karen Reid about his son’s big day on Friday.

She said: “We told him we had enjoyed it very much and he said he had enjoyed it as well.”

While Charles was still trying to recover from Friday’s fun and frolicking, newlyweds William and Kate returned to their cottage in Anglesey, North Wales, to begin their lives as a married couple at home. The prince is due to resume his duties as an RAF rescue helicopter pilot today.

The pair stayed out of the limelight as they prepare for their honeymoon, which they have postponed in the hope they can slip away unnoticed at a later date.

They are believed to have spent a quiet weekend at Windsor Castle. William and Kate will not have servants at their cottage as they hope to live a normal life as possible.

Courtiers plan to ease Kate into royal life with just a few public engagements. The only trip so far announced is a short one to Canada in July.

William’s aides last night denied reports he would be leaving his wife behind for 10 weeks in September while he serves in the Falklands.

Queues yesterday formed around Westminster Abbey to get a glimpse of Kate’s wedding bouquet which is on display for a week. Her dress will also go on show, Clarence House confirmed.

- ONE London punter was £2,500 better off last night after betting £100 at 25-1 that the couple’s first dance would be to Ellie Goulding’s cover of Elton John’s classic Your Song.

Prince William & Kate Middleton give crowds a drive-past

The Prince drove out of Buckingham Palace with his new wife at his side in the convertible with the number plate 'JUST WED'.

The couple left their reception and headed to Clarence House in the open-top car ? decorated with heart-shaped balloons and an 'L' plate.

The beaming couple smiled as those still lining the Mall let off a roar as they went past in the dark blue sports car.

It is the same Aston Martin that 28-year-old Wills' father Prince Charles had driven Princess Diana in in 1982.

MARRIED couple leave Palace in Aston Martin with "JU5T WED" registration

William drove Kate, 29, the short distance to Clarence House as his colleagues from the RAF flew overhead in a yellow rescue helicopter.

Best man Prince Harry, 26, and other family and friends had tied the balloons to the back of the Prince of Wales's car.

A St James's Palace spokesman said: "It was Prince William's idea to drive his new bride away from the official reception on their first journey as a married couple to his family home."

The Seychelles blue Aston Martin was decorated with patriotic red, white and blue ribbons tied from the windscreen to the bonnet.

RAF pilots from 'B' Flight 22 Squadron, of which William is a member flew overhead in the Sea King helicopter as a special surprise for the bride and groom.

It was in honour of William's job as a RAF search and rescue helicopter pilot.

The new Duke of Cambridge - who had switched from his scarlet wedding ceremony attire in to a black frock coat of the Irish Guards- smiled broadly as he drove his wife, still in her bridal gown, through the Privy Purse.

Wills and Kate emerged from the palace at 3.35pm in the Aston Martin Volante DB6 MKII.

The convertible was a gift to the Prince of Wales from the Queen in 1969 for his 21st birthday.

A St James's Palace spokeswoman said: "The Prince of Wales was more than happy to loan the car to the couple for this special journey."

In 2008, at the request of environmentally-friendly Charles, the car was converted to run on E85 Bio-ethanol which is made from English wine wastage.

Well-wishers lining the route reacted to the choice of car with delight and disbelief.

Claire Bull, 52, from Flimwell, East Sussex, said: "It was quite a surprise, I thought it would be another carriage or something.

"They both looked very happy and relaxed."

Pamela Anderson, 66, from Bridgend, South Wales, said the car was "a real surprise" and was "wonderful".

She said: "I was expecting a Rolls-Royce."

She added the choice showed they were "at one" with the people and the country had "taken them to their hearts".

Prince William joked the royal wedding was 'just a small family affair'

As billions watched the historic scenes on TV and VIP guests packed magnificent Westminster Abbey, the Prince seized on the humour behind the occasion.

Turning to Michael Middleton and his dazzling daughter, he quipped with mock innocence: "I just thought it would be a small family affair!"

The comic aside - moments before the ceremony began - set Kate and her father at ease, surrounded as they were by centuries of tradition and the solemn majesty of the event.

William had arrived 40 minutes earlier with best man Prince Harry - entering the Abbey at 10.20am.

Before that a hushed chatter had filled the air as, one by one, the rich, famous and worthy filed in - slowly taking in the sheer scale and significance of the venue.

It is the final resting place of 18 monarchs - and was hosting its 15th Royal Wedding since being rebuilt by Henry III in 1245.

All around them, the Abbey's statues and memorials to Great Britons past served as a reminder that the lucky 1,900 inside had a front row seat to watch history in the making.

Guests included 40 foreign Royals and 200 members of Government, Parliament and Diplomatic Corps.

Kate arrived just after 11am, running 20 seconds late. Passing the "avenue of trees", she moved on past the nave and intricate golden quire screen and on into the quire.

She then walked to the Lantern, where she finally met William at the Sacrarium steps.

The strains of the first hymn, Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer, soon rose high into the nave - the singing led by the choirs of the Abbey and Her Majesty's Chapel Royal, St James's.

SEE the key moments from the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton

Poignantly, the hymn was the last at the funeral of Wills' mum Diana.

Nineteen minutes after Kate's arrival the Archbishop of Canterbury uttered the immortal words: "I now pronounce you man and wife."

To make it official, the couple later entered the holiest part of the abbey, the tiny enclosed Chapel of St Edward the Confessor, to sign the register.

Pippa Middleton and Prince Harry just wouldn't work

Pippa and Harry (Pic:Getty) Prince Harry and Pippa Middleton

ONE THING you don’t want on your wedding day is to be upstaged by your sister. That’s why in pantomimes the lead actress always insists on ugly sisters.

I knew a pantomime actress whose husband was cheating on her behind her back.

In fairness I and several members of the audience did try to warn her.

Just one day after Kate and William’s wedding and there’s a Pippa Middleton Ass Appreciation Society page set up on Facebook which has amassed more than 130,000 followers.

It makes you wonder whose backsides these people are now neglecting.William Hill are speculating on whether Prince Harry, the world’s most eligible bachelor (in the royal family), will marry his sister-in-law Pippa after complimenting her during the nuptials.

Hills are offering 25-1 on an unlikely Prince/Middleton double.

I can’t see Harry and Pippa working as a couple. Pippa is smart, hard-working, and attractive. She undermines everything the royal family stands for.

Besides Harry is still with on-off girlfriend Chelsy Davy, a woman who looks two parts regality, three parts Readers’ Wives.

First look at official royal wedding pix with Prince William and Princess Kate

In the first, above, Wills and Kate are seen happily side-by-side in an image portraying the perfect married couple.

Then there's one for the whole family with the Queen and Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Camilla, along with Best Man Harry, Kate's sister Pippa and family.

And to whet the appetite of Brits awaiting royal offspring, the bride and groom posed playfully with the page boys and bridesmaids, who larked around smiling for the cameras.

The Prince and Princess were seen leaving London in a helicopter this morning, heading to a secret location for their long-awaited honeymoon.

Earlier today, Kate's bridal bouquet ? which touchingly included sweet William ? was left at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior, in accordance with Royal tradition.

Prince Harry decorated William and Kate's car with balloons and JU5T WED plate

But trust fun-loving Prince Harry to come up with the classic comedy moment - arranging for bride and groom to drive off in a traditional old banger with party balloons and a JU5T WED number plate.

OK, so this old banger was actually Prince Charles's ?350,000 open-topped Aston Martin.

But the time-honoured best man's prank delighted the thousands waiting outside Buckingham Palace - and had millions more watching on TV in fits of giggles.

Wills and Kate grinned broadly as they slowly drove 500 yards down The Mall to Clarence House - to cheers, laughter and applause.

MARRIED couple leave Palace in Aston Martin with "JU5T WED" registration

To complete the happy picture, a yellow Sea King rescue helicopter piloted by Wills' RAF colleagues flew overhead in tribute.

Harry had warned his brother he had a surprise in store. The bonnet of the 41-year-old classic motor sported red, white and blue ribbons and giant bows.

Balloons fluttered from the bumper - some bearing the newlyweds' initials and others shaped as hearts.

With the novelty number plate and an L plate, it was the kind of cheap and cheerful joke seen at ordinary weddings all over Britain - and would have been unthinkable at a posh Royal occasion even a few years ago.

Harry's exuberant prank - and Wills' good-natured response - is typical of the brothers' down-to-earth nature.

They have a lack of stuffiness that has endeared them to Royal fans everywhere - and is a touching reminder of the way their mother Diana won the hearts of millions the world over.

Wills wore a red Irish Guards tunic as he tied the knot but swapped it for an Irish Guards frock coat as he and Kate drove from the Palace in the Aston Martin after a buffet reception for 650 guests.

The helicopter fly-past was a surprise treat for Wills from colleagues in the RAF's Search and Rescue team.

The chopper, which had an RAF flag slung underneath as it circled The Mall, carried crew members from B Flight 22 Squadron, where Wills is a pilot.

It was flown by New Zealand-born squadron leader Holly Steel. Her co-pilot was Flight Lieutenant Lee Turner, awarded the Air Force Cross in March 2009 for helping to save crew members from a stricken ferry off Blackpool.

The fly-by was described as "a fitting tribute to acknowledge Prince William's role as an RAF Search and Rescue Pilot".

Charles's blue 1970 Volante DB6 Mk II was a present from the Queen on his 21st birthday.

He and Diana were pictured enjoying a ride in the car in 1984, three years after their wedding. The Aston Martin has been converted to run on bioethanol distilled from surplus wine by environmentally-conscious Charles. It is kept at Highgrove and clocks up just 300 miles a year.

St James's Palace said: "The Prince of Wales was more than happy to loan the car to the couple for this special journey."

Met officers policing the Royal Wedding arrested 55 people. In the most serious incident a man of 38 was nicked for allegedly indecently assaulting a 14-year-old girl in the Mall crowd.

Others were held for theft, being drunk and disorderly, possessing drugs and criminal damage.

More than a dozen anti-monarchy protesters were arrested for allegedly planning an invasion of a Crown building.

And three people from an anti-capitalist group were seized on the eve of the wedding for plotting a mock execution of a dummy dressed as Prince Andrew.

Scotland Yard's Assistant Commissioner Lynne Owens said: "I am delighted with the way it has gone. We set out to make this event happy and safe. We have achieved that.

"It was extremely good-humoured and the public were brilliant."

A HORSE called Royal Wedding stormed to victory hours after Wills wed. Millions backed the 4-1 chance at Fontwell. Corals' David Stevens said: "The payout could be up to ?10million across the industry."

By RYAN SABEY

PRINCE Charles paid tribute to Kate yesterday - telling guests at the reception how grateful he was to have her join the family.

Her ex-headmaster Dr Bob Acheson revealed: "He said he was very lucky to have a daughter-in-law like Kate."

Charles also cracked jokes about son William's bald patch at the Buckingham Palace do right after the wedding. A guest said: "He joked about his own bald patch and his son's thinning hair, saying it must be hereditary.

"Everyone found it funny, including William and Kate."

William delighted guests by serving up a chocolate BISCUIT cake - made at his request- alongside the traditional eight-tier wedding cake.

Royal wedding: New Testino photo of Prince William and Kate Middleton is incredibly poignant

William and Kate: Portrait picture by Mario Testino Prince William and Kate Middleton

THE photo used in Wills and Kate’s official wedding programme seems familiar... and incredibly poignant.

Mario Testino’s portrait invokes the memory of his mum Diana.

Testino’s iconic images of Diana were published in July 1997, just before she died.

He said: “Two people in love have a glow and a presence more powerful than anything else, and I wanted that to be the subject of the picture.

“William is a very photogenic person... self-confident, relaxed, impressive – and so much like his mother.”

Prince William thrills crowds on his wedding eve with a surprise walkabout

And as he shook hundreds of hands, he joked: "All I've got to do is get my lines right."

Wills, 28, made his unexpected appearance from Clarence House at 8.30pm, triggering near-hysteria from adoring Royal fans camped outside ready for today's wedding.

Casually dressed in a dark jumper and white shirt, he grinned from ear to ear as he thanked them for their support and exchanged greetings.

Cameras flashed, flags waved, champagne bottles were waved in the air. Some excited revellers wore fun hats - and two Welsh women were dressed as daffodils.

PRINCE WILLIAM greets well-wishers the night before wedding

Laughing William gestured to their tent and asked them: "Are you going to sleep here? Have you got a Jacuzzi in there?"

Scores shouted, "Good luck!" And William - followed around the forest of hands by his best man Prince Harry - responded: "You're amazing. These crowds are amazing. Thank you so much."

The groom's gratitude in the ten-minute walkabout mirrored a public message he and bride Kate Middleton, 29, sent out to millions of Brits earlier yesterday.

The couple said they had been "incredibly moved" by the nation's enthusiasm for today's Westminster Abbey ceremony, due to be watched by TWO BILLION worldwide.

Wedding Programme

The thoroughly modern pair broke with tradition by writing a note in an official souvenir brochure published to mark the most anticipated Royal event for 30 years. It read:

"We are both so delighted that you are able to join us in celebrating what we hope will be one of the happiest days of our lives.

"The affection shown to us by so many people during our engagement has been incredibly moving, and has touched us both deeply.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone most sincerely for their kindness."

The crowds at Clarence House, Buckingham Palace and the Abbey will be among an 800,000-strong throng expected to pack the route of the post-wedding procession.

Many lay claim to their positions or set up camp in "tent cities" amid a festival atmosphere.

Last night beaming Kate waved to a cheering crowd as she arrived at London's Goring hotel to spend her last hours as a single woman.

The next time the bride will be seen will be at 10.45am today when she heads to the service with her father Michael. But there is a chance she could be SOAKED when she steps from her limousine outside the Abbey at 11am.

Despite the unseasonal hot weather over Easter, rain and even thunderstorms could put a dampener on the wedding day.

Weather forecaster Alison Cobb said: "We can expect showers across London for much of the day. There is a chance they will turn heavy with local thunderstorms."

Last night it emerged Kate's wedding dress is expected to feature a long train. A source who witnessed her final rehearsal with her bridesmaids at the Abbey yesterday told how she wore "a fake skirt with a long train to walk down the aisle".

Wills will wed in the red tunic of the Irish Guards, of which he was made Colonel earlier this year, with a gold and crimson sash.

The marriage service - especially its music - will be deliberately themed around "Britishness".

And William's mother Princess Diana will be at its heart.

After taking their vows, the bride and groom will leave the Abbey to Di's favourite orchestral wedding march, Crown Imperial by William Walton.

It was played at the late Princess's wedding to Prince Charles in July 1981. And Wills and Kate chose it personally as a tribute to her.

In addition, the final hymn at Diana's funeral will be the first to be sung at today's ceremony.

Guide me, O thou great Redeemer, written by 18th-century preacher William Williams, also featured at a memorial service in 2007 marking the tenth anniversary of her death.

Prince Charles will be saluted by Wills and Kate, too.

Farewell to Stromness, a piano piece by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, is being included in the service as it was played at Charles and Camilla's 2005 blessing.

A St James's Palace spokesman said: "It's a personal touch - an acknowledgement of William's father and the Duchess of Cornwall."

Kate's wedding ring will be a plain, slim gold band made by Royal warrant holders Wartski.

Under a tradition for Royal brides, it was fashioned from a nugget of Welsh gold. The Queen gave grandson Wills the precious metal to mark his big day. He will NOT wear a ring after tying the knot.

Clarence House yesterday confirmed Kate will not promise to "obey" Wills during their exchange of vows. Instead she will pledge to "love, comfort, honour and keep" him, echoing the pledges made by Diana 30 years ago.

Clever Kate will be able to call on a secret stash of emergency aids to make sure she is ready for the vows and the following kiss.

Her 27-year-old sister Pippa, the maid of honour, will give her boiled sweets to suck on the way to the Abbey to prevent her mouth from drying up.

Pippa's handbag will also contain wet wipes, lipliner and a lip moisturiser so Kate can pucker up.

A Royal source said: "Obviously there is a professional make-up artist but Pippa will have a kit of essentials in her bag at her sister's request. She doesn't want dry lips when she is saying her vows in front of William and the world."

Kate will wear Creed Fleurissimo, the perfume Prince Rainier of Monaco created for Grace Kelly before they wed.

And The Sun can reveal her eyebrows will be "threaded," a technique popular with celebs including Angelina Jolie and Liz Hurley.

Two strands of thread are crossed over the desired area and pulled taut, cutting the hairs in perfect symmetry. It avoids the possibility of redness left by waxing or plucking.

Wills and Kate will leave for the Buckingham Palace reception in the open 1902 State Landau if the weather is kind - or the Glass Coach if the heavens open.

Last night Wills' stepmother Camilla agreed to give the groom, Charles and Harry some "boys" time and was thought to have bedded down in a suite at London's Mandarin Oriental hotel.

The Queen hosted a lavish dinner at the hotel last night for foreign Royals and other dignitaries.

But Syria's ambassador to Britain Sami Khiyami was absent.

His invitation to the wedding was withdrawn on Foreign Office advice to signal the UK's outrage at his government's bloody crackdown on Syrian freedom protesters.

Royal wedding: Prince William made Duke of Cambridge

Prince William and Kate Middleton (Pic:PA) Prince William and Kate Middleton

Prince William has been made the Duke of Cambridge on his wedding day by his grandmother the Queen, Buckingham Palace announced.

The royal groom was given a dukedom - the highest rank in British peerage - to mark his marriage to Kate Middleton.

Miss Middleton will now become Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge on her marriage at the much-anticipated ceremony in Westminster Abbey.

William also became the Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus, which means Kate will become the Countess of Strathearn and Baroness Carrickfergus.

All titles are in the gift of the Queen and it was up to the monarch to choose which one to bestow on her grandson and his new wife.
But William's thoughts will also have been taken into account by the royal matriarch in a private discussion between the Prince and his grandmother.

Tradition dictates that royal men receive a title on their wedding - and often more than one.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement: "The Queen has today been pleased to confer a Dukedom on Prince William of Wales.

"His titles will be Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus.

"Prince William thus becomes His Royal Highness The Duke of Cambridge and Miss Catherine Middleton on marriage will become Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge."

As well as a duchess, Miss Middleton is also technically Princess William of Wales.

According to protocol, she is not officially Princess Catherine as she was not born a princess in her own right.

Instead she adopts her husband's first name, in the same way as Princess Michael of Kent, who married the Queen's cousin Prince Michael of Kent.

But it is likely that in the eyes of the media and public, she could always be known as Princess Catherine or Princess Kate.

The Duke of Cambridge was seen as the favourite for William's new title in the run-up to the wedding.
The Queen even paid a visit to the city just two days ago.

Kate will become Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge

Charles Kidd, editor of Debrett's Peerage, said of the dukedom: "It's a well-known place and I think it will have some resonance with the public."

The last Duke of Cambridge was a famous military figure who wed a commoner for love but then also kept a mistress for more than 30 years.

Born in 1819, Prince George, a grandson of George III, married actress Sarah Louisa Fairbrother in 1847 when she was pregnant with their third child but his marriage was never recognised by his cousin Queen Victoria.

Like William, this Duke of Cambridge joined the Army. He served in the Crimean War and was promoted to commander-in-chief in 1887.

Once married, the newlyweds will pass a statue of the Duke sat on a horse close to the Ministry of Defence in Whitehall in their carriage procession.

The last Duchess of Cambridge was the glamorous German-born Princess Augusta Wilhelmina Louisa of Hesse-Cassel, married to Prince Adolphus Frederick, the 1st Duke of Cambridge and mother to Prince George, the 2nd Duke of Cambridge.

Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding music pays tribute to Princess Diana

Prince William and Kate Middleton (Pic:PA) Kate Middleton and Prince William

PRINCE William and Kate Middleton will pay a touching tribute to Princess Diana today – when their wedding service will feature a hymn played at her funeral.

The couple have selected the final hymn from Diana’s 1997 funeral to be the first sung in Westminster Abbey by their 1,900 guests.

Two billion people worldwide will witness how William’s late mother remained at the forefront of his and Kate’s thoughts as they planned their special day.

The rousing Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer was also chosen by William and brother Harry in the Guards Chapel on the 10th anniversary of Princess Diana’s tragic death in a Paris car crash.

Friends and family will join the royal couple to sing the emotional and inspiring words to the Welsh tune just before they say their vows in front of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

And in another tribute, bride Kate will make her three-and-a-half minute walk down the aisle to the dramatic sounds of Sir Hubert Parry’s anthem I was Glad, which was played at Charles and Diana’s 1981 wedding.

William has told close friends and royals he is sure his mother will be there in spirit today, wishing him and Kate happiness.

Along with brother Harry he has publicly vowed never to forget her.

Princess Diana (Pic:Getty Images) Princess Diana

A palace source said: “There is no doubt that as he stands at the altar with his bride, William will be thinking of the mother who had enormous influence on him. Diana would be 49 by now and it is deeply disappointing to him that she is not around to see him marry or that she never met Kate.

“But William is determined not to dwell on that because he knows this is Kate’s big day and nothing must be allowed to spoil that.”

The last time William was in the Abbey for a state occasion was after he was part of the slow and painful procession behind his mother’s coffin aged just 15.

With Harry, father Prince Charles, grandfather Prince Philip and Diana’s brother Charles Spencer, he walked with head bowed as thousands of mourners looked on in silence.

But today, the crowds lining the streets will be cheering wildly as William makes his way to marry Kate.

Singer Sir Elton John, whose song Goodbye England’s Rose – a reworking of his Candle in the Wind hit – was the most emotional moment of Diana’s funeral, is one of the few celebrity guests invited to the wedding.

And he said: “I can’t imagine at that young age having to walk in the public, following your mother’s coffin.

“And the next time we’re in the Abbey it’s to see him walking up the aisle with a beautiful woman, the love of his life. I think it’s the most joyous result and I’m sure Diana would be very, very happy about it.”

William has said he gave Kate Diana’s sapphire and diamond engagement ring as a way of “keeping her close to it all”. And the Mirror told last week how he took his fiancée for a poignant visit to his mother’s grave on the Oval island at the Spencer family ancestral estate in Althorp, Northamptonshire.

In their choice of wedding music, Wills and Kate have also selected a hymn and three songs in recognition of the support given to them by Prince Charles and Camilla.

Love Divine, All Loves Excelling, by Charles Wesley, was performed at Charles and Camilla’s blessing at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, in 2005. Three of the seven orchestral pieces played by the London Chamber Orchestra as the guests take their seats are also from Charles and Camilla’s wedding.

Prince Charles (pic: Getty) Prince Charles

A St James’s Palace spokesman said: “It’s a personal touch to the couple – an acknowledgement of William’s father and the Duchess of Cornwall.”

Kate spent hours listening to music on her iPod and also sought advice from Prince Charles. His hand can be seen in the inclusion of William Walton’s Crown Imperial, which was played at the coronation of George VI – husband of his beloved late grandma, the Queen Mother. It will be played as the couple leave the Abbey as husband and wife.

There is also a strong nod to Wales in the couple’s final musical decisions.

Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer – from the Welsh tune by John Hughes with words by William Williams – is best known today as the Welsh rugby anthem Bread of Heaven. Love Divine, All Loves Excelling is set to the Welsh tune Blaenwern. In honour of the North Wales island where they have set up home, William and Kate have also chosen a work by modern composer Paul Mealor, who has a studio on Anglesey.

But their final hymn is about as English as is possible – the stirring and popular Jerusalem, a poem by William Blake set to music by Sir Hubert Parry and arranged by Edward Elgar.

A variation of the traditional English folk song Greensleeves by Ralph Vaughan Williams will feature as well, and William and Kate have also commissioned some new music to add a modern twist to the day.

Special fanfare Valiant and Brave – after the motto of William’s RAF Search and Rescue No 22 Squadron – was composed by Wing Commander Duncan Stubbs, the Force’s principal director of music.

The 30-second celebration will be sounded by seven trumpeters and one drummer from the Central Band of the RAF as the bride and groom prepare for their procession to the Great West Door after they marry.

Kate’s brother James, 23, will be making the only reading of the service.

In what is sure to be a nerve-racking moment in the spotlight, he will tell the congregation and TV viewers: “Let love be genuine”.

A hymn for Diana

Guide me, O thou great redeemer,
Pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but thou art mighty,
Hold me with thy powerful hand;
Bread of heaven, bread of heaven
Feed me till I want no more;
Feed me till I want no more.
Open now the crystal fountain
Whence the healing stream doth flow;
Let the fire and cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through:
Strong deliverer, strong deliverer;
Be thou still my strength and shield;
Be thou still my strength and shield.
When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of death, and hell’s destruction
Land me safe on Canaan’s side:
Songs of praises, songs of praises,
I will ever give to thee;
I will ever give to thee.

Words by William Williams

Royal wedding: Daily Mirror wishes good luck to Prince William and Kate Middleton

Prince William and Kate Middleton (Pic:PA) Kate Middleton and Prince William

WEDDING days are a nerve-jangling moment for any happy couple. But for Prince William and Catherine Middleton, today is an especially daunting prospect.

Few newlyweds share this most intimate of moments with a million people on the streets of London and two billion more watching on TV around the world.

But Wills and Kate have conducted their courtship and preparations for the big day with grace and modesty. Part out of seeking to avoid the three-ring circus that surrounded other royal weddings. Part out of the realisation that the country’s relationship with the monarchy as an institution has changed irrevocably.

The Royal Family are no longer at the centre of public life. And for “The Firm” to survive, it needs to make further changes to reflect how Britain has changed.

In 1923 the BBC were asked not to broadcast the marriage of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (later the Queen Mother) and the Duke of York in case men “might hear the service, perhaps even some of them sitting in public houses, with their hats on”. How times have changed.

While wedding fever has gripped the United States, our own interest has been as relatively low-key as the couple themselves. It reflects not only a change in our regard for the monarchy, but also a reflection of these difficult economic times.

One day Wills and Kate will be King and Queen. But from the moment they become husband and wife, the responsibility for taking the monarchy to its next, more modest, stage rests on their shoulders. But that is a debate for another time.

Today, even the cynical among us should enjoy the pomp and circumstance, the colour and majesty, and cheer two young people who are declaring their love in time-honoured tradition.

Good luck to them both.

Prince William shows his mum’s warmth with heartfelt message to nation

Huge crowds were up to TEN deep at 7am today as throbbing crowds prepared to celebrate the Royal Wedding.

And wedding guests began filing into Westminster Abbey for the ceremony just after 8.30am.

TV presenter Ben Fogle ? who is attending ? showed his excitement when he tweeted: "Quick walk in Hyde Park with the dogs while the girls have their hair done. Very excited. London feels electric."

The crowds gathered as it was announced Wills will become the Duke of Cambridge today just hours before he marries Kate ? who will become Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge when the happy couple are pronounced husband and wife.

Last night Wills, 28, showed his mum Diana's legendary warmth in a heartfelt message to the nation.

He said: "The affection shown to us by so many has touched us both deeply."

The bitterly cold night failed to dampen the spirits of the thousands of revellers hoping to get the best view.

Westminster City Council said today's wedding was the capital's largest ever event and was "miles ahead" of last year's papal visit.

Incredibly Paul Reid, the authority's head of operations, said he estimated nearly a million people were on the streets of London.

Royal well-wishers from as far away as Zimbabwe and the US had camped for the last two nights to get the best view of Wills and Kate leaving the Abbey as man and wife.

WATCH the best of the action from William and Kate's big bash

Actress Sheryl Milner, 48, bagged a front row pitch after arriving five days ago from San Francisco.

Wearing a twin set of pearls and waving her Union flag, she said: "I slept on concrete for four days and in a tent last night but I feel well rested.

"I have waited for this day for quite a few years and I can feel the presence of Diana here today. It's just fantastic to be here."

Jessica Spence, 23, from Zimbabwe, said: "It's been a long cold night but it's been lots of fun. There's been some rivalry for spots with people arriving at 3am and trying to come into your spot."

Well-wishers have turned the route of the Royal Wedding procession into a sea of red, white and blue.

Waving flags and clutching umbrellas against the predicted rain, the crowds are waiting with mounting excitement for the first glimpse of the couple - and in particular the bride's dress, which has been kept a closely-guarded secret.

Kate, 29, was said to be nervous but calm as she made her final preparations for a ceremony that will be watched on television by two billion people worldwide.

Yesterday she was seen holding her hands as if checking for trembles in a jokey moment as she arrives at the Abbey for a final rehearsal.

But the Royal-to-be was beaming with confidence by the time she left with Prince Harry.

Today the Dean of Westminster, the Very Rev Dr John Hall, who is conducting the service, said: "I think she will be quite calm, as a matter of fact.

"She seems to be very much in control of herself and looking forward very much to the day. .

"After the final rehearsal when William and Catherine came on Wednesday evening, they both seemed to be very happy. I'm sure they will be a little bit nervous but I'm sure they can cope with that."

Among the 1,900 guests invited to the service are a number of celebrities, including David and Victoria Beckham.

Victoria spoke of her delight at the occasion, writing on Twitter: "London looks beautiful!!! We are so proud to be British!"

Meanwhile, a joyful Prince William thrilled crowds of well-wishers on his wedding eve with a surprise walkabout.

As he shook hundreds of hands, he joked: "All I've got to do is get my lines right."

Wills made his unexpected appearance from Clarence House at 8.30pm, triggering near-hysteria from adoring Royal fans camped outside ready for today's wedding.

Messages of good luck have streamed in from countless far-flung spots across the globe - and beyond.

Even astronauts from the International Space Station sent greetings to the couple, ahead of their marriage.

In their interstellar message Flight Engineers Paolo Nespoli, Ron Garan and Cady Coleman offered their congratulations and they expect to have a "great view" of the big day.

THE spirit of Diana was present before the wedding in the official picture of Wills and Kate released yesterday.

It was taken by Mario Testino, the photographer who captured her at her most radiant.

Mario was a close friend of Princess Diana - and took iconic images of her.

Peruvian Mario's official picture of the Royal couple echoes the intimacy of his black and white shots of William's mum - including one resting her chin on her hands.

Mario, 56, took it in March 1997 after she decided to auction off 79 dresses for charity.

It was published that July - a month before her death.

Royal Wedding: The world awakes to Prince William and Kate Middleton's big day

Prince William and Kate Middleton (Pic:PA) Prince William and Kate Middleton (Pic:PA)

The world will watch in fascination today as Prince William marries Kate Middleton in a ceremony combining royal pomp and tender romance.

Months of meticulous preparations will come to fruition when the couple say their vows in Westminster Abbey in front of 1,900 guests and a global television audience of two billion.

Forecasters' warnings of rain showers over central London this morning failed to dampen the mounting excitement about the long-awaited royal wedding.

Heavy showers could fall on the royal couple's much-anticipated balcony kiss.

Although temperatures could reach 20C (68F) in the capital, there is a greater risk of rain as the early afternoon approaches.

William and his new bride are expected to appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace at 1.25pm.

Billy Payne, a forecaster for MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "There's a reasonable chance of a few heavy showers around at that time.

"We're expecting temperatures of up to 20 degrees, which is quite pleasant for this time of year. But fairly brisk north-easterly winds should take the edge off."

As wedding guests begin to arrive at Westminster Abbey from 8.15am it is likely to be cloudy, he said.

But this will probably give way to sunny spells from the late morning.

However, there is also a higher chance that rain could fall on Miss Middleton as she steps from the limousine at 11am on her father's arm to enter the abbey.

The forecaster added: "The later you go into the morning the higher the risk is of showers breaking out.

"Because the sun is quite strong, the showers will be heavy in nature with risk of thunder, particularly during the early afternoon."

Hundreds of thousands of well-wishers are expected in London to applaud the couple and enjoy the party atmosphere.

The weather looks set to be kinder to other parts of the UK that have featured in the royal love story.

At St Andrews in Fife, where the couple met as undergraduates, a wedding breakfast party with an expected 1,500 guests is forecast to be bathed in sunshine.

The wedding will also be shown on big screens outside the coffee shop at Balmoral Castle, near Ballater, Aberdeenshire.

One of the hottest UK spots promises to be in north-west Scotland where temperatures could hit 20C (68F).

Showers are predicted for Anglesey - where a series of celebratory events are scheduled. William works there as a search and rescue helicopter pilot and that is where the couple will have their first marital home.

Parties in Miss Middleton's home village of Bucklebury, Berkshire could also be hit by the same rain clouds threatening London.

But Helen Chivers of the Met Office said yesterday there was only a small chance of rain in London today.

She forecast sunny spells and predicted it should be dry when Miss Middleton arrives at the abbey.

Scores of well-wishers have been camped outside Westminster Abbey for days to get the best spot for the first full view of the bride's dress when she steps out of the Rolls-Royce carrying her to the service.

Miss Middleton, 29, will walk up the aisle on her father's arm as a commoner.

Just over an hour later she will leave, with her new husband by her side, as an HRH, a Princess and a future Queen.

Invited guests include David and Victoria Beckham, Sir Elton John and Guy Ritchie and Prime Minister David Cameron.

A host of politicians, clergy, military chiefs, ambassadors and more than 45 foreign royals will begin filling the abbey from 8.15am.

There too will be William's proud grandparents the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, his father the Prince of Wales and stepmother the Duchess of Cornwall, joined by some 40 members of the British royal family, as well as close friends and confidantes of the couple.

William, 28, and his brother Prince Harry, 26, who is his best man, will arrive at the historic 1,000-year-old church at 10.15am.

By then the second-in-line to the throne may have been given a new title by the Queen, in a traditional gesture, to mark his wedding.

The groom, an RAF search and rescue helicopter pilot, will be dressed in red, wearing the famous scarlet tunic of an Irish Guards officer, rather than an Air Force uniform.

William faces a nailbiting 45-minute wait until his bride's arrival, part of which he will spend in private with Harry in the tiny side Chapel of St Edmund.

Kate spent her last night as a single woman with her parents, Michael and Carole, sister Pippa and brother James at the exclusive Goring hotel in Belgravia, a short distance from Buckingham Palace.

William spent the evening at Clarence House with his family and gave royal enthusiasts on The Mall a treat as he went on an unplanned walkabout, admitting his "nerves" to the crowds.

As he spent several minutes shaking hands and thanking people for their support, he even joked: "All I've got to do is get my lines right."

Best man Prince Harry followed William and admitted to fans he had left his speech to the last minute.

He confessed: "I finished it yesterday. I thought it was a bit late."

Friends Sue Heppell, 59, Susie Record, 67, and Ann Burch, 65, travelled from Newcastle to find a good spot outside Clarence House at midday yesterday.

Mrs Record said she had met William last night and he had seemed very relaxed about his impending nuptials.

"He asked us whether we were sleeping out," she said. "He didn't seem surprised."

At exactly 10.51 today, the world will hope to get the first glimpse of Kate's dress, which has been kept a closely-guarded secret, when she leaves for the abbey.

However, they may have to wait, as the hotel has erected screens to ensure no-one catches a glimpse before she arrives at the abbey.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to line the mile-and-a-half route to Westminster Abbey, which takes in some of London's most famous landmarks as it passes through The Mall, Whitehall and Parliament Square.

Some 5,000 police officers are on duty as part of Britain's biggest security operation this century, amid continuing fears about the threat of terrorism and disruptive demonstrations.

The wedding service is a traditional religious affair with a strong flavour of "Britishness", and includes music by three of the nation's favourite composers, Elgar, Britten and Vaughan Williams.

The abbey has been decorated with an "avenue of trees" along the nave made up of eight English field maples and two hornbeams.

William and Kate's nuptials are the 15th to be celebrated at the holy site, which has witnessed 37 coronations over the centuries, beginning with William the Conqueror in 1066.

The wedding of this William comes more than a millennium after the first King William was crowned.

Kate is following in the footsteps of Diana, Princess of Wales, and will not promise to "obey" her new husband in her vows but instead to "love, comfort, honour and keep" him.

With William choosing not to wear a wedding ring, only he will say "With this ring I thee wed", as he places the simple, slim band fashioned from a nugget of Welsh gold on his bride's finger.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, is marrying the couple, the Bishop of London, the Rt Rev Richard Chartres, will give the address, and the Dean of Westminster, the Very Rev Dr John Hall, is conducting the service.

The witnesses who sign the historic marriage registers during the ceremony will be the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, Harry, Kate's parents, her sister Pippa and her brother James.

The guest list has provoked controversy, with the Foreign Office announcing the last-minute withdrawal of the Syrian ambassador's invitation yesterday in the wake of a bloody crackdown on protesters against president Bashar Assad.

Further questions have been raised about why former Labour prime ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown were not invited while Tory counterparts Sir John Major and Baroness Thatcher were.

After the ceremony, William and Kate will ride back to Buckingham Palace in the open-top 1902 State Landau, the same fairytale horse-drawn carriage used by Charles and Diana on their wedding day 30 years earlier - although if it rains, the newly-weds will use the Glass Coach.

1902 State Landau carriage (Pic:AP) The 1902 State Landau is Wills and Kate's choice of transport back to Buckingham Palace after the ceremony

At 1.25pm, the bride and groom will step out onto the Palace's famous balcony, joined by the Queen and their families to watch the thundering flypast of a Lancaster, a Spitfire and a Hurricane from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and Two Tornado and Two Typhoon jets.

Then, the moment the world will be waiting for - the long-awaited kiss, the first time William and Kate have ever done so in public.

There will be two receptions at the palace, one with canapes hosted by the Queen in the afternoon for 650 guests, followed by the Prince of Wales's more intimate black-tie gathering of 300 close family and friends in the evening.

The 85-year-old monarch will skip the evening party, missing Harry's best man speech, by heading out of the capital with the Duke of Edinburgh for a private weekend, allowing guests to party the night away in her official London home.

The royal wedding is the culmination of a romance that began more than eight years ago when William and Kate met as students at St Andrews University in Fife, Scotland.

Their story has captured the hearts of people across the planet and thousands of foreign journalists, photographers and TV crews have descended on London to cover the event.

Millions of British workers are enjoying an extra public holiday to celebrate and many will attend one of the 5,500 street parties being organised across the country, including one in Downing Street.

Royal wedding: Carol Ann Duffy's poetry present for Prince William and Kate Middleton

Prince William and Kate Middleton (Pic:PA) Kate Middleton and Prince William

ONE of William and Kate’s wedding presents is a unique artwork to go alongside a verse by Britain’s poet laureate.

Carol Ann Duffy felt that the Royal Wedding was the perfect time to celebrate the unbreakable relationship between love and poetry.

She sees her own poem as inclusive of “everyone in love” and has produced a 46 line poem as part of Britain’s “national art”.

Rings imagines the types of rings – mostly found in nature – that a lover would give to their partner.

The poet laureate produced the verse with Stephen Raw, a textual artist who drew maps based on JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, copies of which were purchased by the British Library.

A copy of the artwork – No 1 – signed by the artist and poet has been sent to William and Kate as a wedding gift. The poet laureate also commissioned work from 20 other poets, with the theme of vows, to be used at weddings and civil partnerships in the UK. “Poetry is our national art and this is a part of that, this is a celebration of the whole country and for all couples and everyone.”

Prints will be signed by Carol Ann Duffy and Stephen Raw and strictly limited to 500 copies.

The poem’s images range from “the ring surrounding the moon”, a “lipstick ring on a cheek” to the “ring of a slow dance”.

Prince Harry free to do the 'dirty' on Prince William in his best man speech

Prince Harry (Insert: Prince William and Kate Middleton) (Pic: Rex/Getty)

Best man Prince Harry is free to do the 'dirty' on his brother - as the Queen will miss his speech.

Harry would probably have had to tone down his delivery if his grandmother had been listening in.

But the monarch won't be present, meaning 'Dirty' Harry has free rein to embarrass Prince William.

The Queen will also not be there to hear Michael Middleton give his father of the bride address - perhaps making it a bit less nerve-wracking for William's new in-law.

Buckingham Palace said the Queen would hear a number of speeches at the lunchtime canapes reception for 650 guests, including family, friends, foreign royals, dignitaries and charity workers.

She will see the bride and groom cutting their lavish multi-tiered wedding cake.

After the first reception draws to a close, the monarch will give over her official London residence for the evening celebrations, allowing revellers to let their hair down at the historic royal residence.

Charles is hosting the black tie bash at the palace for 300 family and friends.

The more intimate celebration, which has no set curfew, will feature dancing as guests party in private.

The Queen will leave Buckingham Palace tomorrow after hosting a lunchtime reception for the bride and groom.

The 85-year-old monarch will head out of the capital with the Duke of Edinburgh for a private weekend, leaving the newlyweds to party the night away at a black tie evening reception with their friends.

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said: "The Queen will host the lunchtime reception and then the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will depart for a private weekend."
