Kate Middleton waved to the crowds outside The Goring hotel as she made what was expected to be her final appearance before tomorrow's wedding.

She was greeted by hotel owner Jeremy Goring as she stepped from a black Jaguar outside the entrance at 5.45pm.

Dressed in a black and white spotted dress, she was accompanied by sister Pippa and mother Carole.

They were welcomed by a large crowd of enthusiasts who had waited outside the central London hotel all day for a glimpse of the bride-to-be.

The hotel had been the scene of frenetic activity all day as final preparations were made for Miss Middleton's arrival.

She is staying at the five-star Belgravia establishment, on Beeston Place, with her sister, brother James, her mother, and father Michael the night before she marries Prince William.

To ensure no-one catches a glimpse of her in her wedding dress before she arrives at Westminster Abbey tomorrow, a canopy has been erected over the front of the hotel.

It covers even the pavement outside to make sure she can enter the Rolls-Royce Phantom VI in which she will travel to the abbey with her father without any photographs being taken of her dress.

Beeston Place was closed to members of the public at 8am today. Large black bollards have been placed at either end of the road to prevent vehicles getting through without permission.

There has been a large police presence at the hotel during the day, with armed officers patrolling outside and sniffer dogs being led into the building.

Gardeners also worked on the front of the hotel, watering plants and tweaking the foliage outside.

Bay trees were seen being delivered to the hotel, as well as several large wooden and cardboard boxes.

The short street near Victoria station has become a focus for the world's media and royal fans alike.

Olivia Wofford, 22, and her mother Christine, 58, had travelled from Michigan, in the United States, to be in London for the royal wedding. They brought their own W and K signs, adorned with American flags, to The Goring.

Mrs Wofford, an accountant, said: "I've been planning this since William was born.

"I've been following the royals for years but couldn't make it to Diana's wedding, which is when I decided to come to her son's instead."

Mr and Mrs Middleton were inside The Goring hotel and other guests had also started to arrive.

The waiting crowds cheered when chefs brought out afternoon tea for them. Treats including lavender cupcakes, carrot cake and sandwiches were delivered, with the help of waitresses.

Cups of coffee and tea were also handed round.

Bride-to-be Kate Middleton hits the shops ahead of Royal Wedding

The blushing bride looked as glamorous as ever as she was snapped on the King's Road, Chelsea, London.

Wearing a ruched black dress that revealed her slender frame and shapely legs, Kate beamed at photographers, as she wore her loosely curled locks down.

The glamorous royal-to-be, who is only nine days away from her wedding, was browsing the chic Whistles boutique.

After making a purchase, the 29-year-old was then seen crossing the road with a bodyguard as she continued a leisurely spending spree.

Kate's look has sparked a fashion frenzy, as women try to copy her style. Within hours of appearing in a Burberry trench coat, it had sold out across the country.

Her fondness for High Street stores including Reiss, Jigsaw and Topshop make her style "wearable" for women across the country.

And today the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh had lunch with Kate's parents, ahead of next week's much anticipated Royal Wedding.

It is believed to be the first time the monarch has met Michael and Carole Middleton, the future in-laws of Prince William.

Kate's parents, self-made millionaires thanks to their mail order business, were invited to Windsor Castle to have lunch with the royal couple.

A source described the gathering of the Middletons and the Queen and Duke as having a "warm atmosphere".

It is thought the lunch was a long-standing engagement in the diary of both the monarch and Kate's parents.

Also present were a small number of members of the Royal Household, thought to be private secretaries.

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman confirmed the meeting, saying: "The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh hosted Mr and Mrs Michael Middleton at a private lunch at Windsor Castle today."
