Kate Middleton 'to borrow Queen's tiara' for Royal Wedding

If the posh punter's hunch is correct, it will mean Kate, 29, has borrowed the priceless head-dress from the Queen to tie the knot with Prince William.

The diamond tiara, from the Queen's personal gems collection, has previously been worn by Queen Mary, the Queen Mum, the Princess Royal and Her Majesty herself.

If she wears it as her "something borrowed" at Westminster Abbey on Friday, Kate will be the first "commoner" to use it for her nuptials.

The betting riddle began when a well-spoken, middle-aged woman tried to lay the ?6,000 cash wager at Ladbrokes in Ascot, Berks.

The manager refused, convinced the punter had inside information.

But the woman then travelled to nearby Egham, where she obtained odds of 12-1.

If her bet comes off, she stands to net ?72,000 - by far the largest stake on the wedding so far. Until now, Kate had been tipped to wear flowers.

In response to the huge punt, Ladbrokes last night closed the book on the much-anticipated question of what Kate will wear on her head to wed Wills, 28.

Spokesman Alex Donohue said: "If the punt comes home, we'll lose a fortune. This woman either has more money than sense, or she is very well informed."

The tiara, made in 1919 for Queen Mary, is formally known as the George III Tiara.
